Get healthier skin with these three simple steps ...

Regardless if you’re a man or a woman, we all want healthier skin (which typically translates into younger-looking skin). Here are three essential tips for achieving this goal that we share with patients here at Kevitch, Chung & Jan.

The first and most important step in achieving healthy skin is the daily application of SPF on your face and neck to protect your skin from the very harmful rays of the sun. We cannot overemphasize how bad sun exposure is for your skin! The constant onslaught of UV rays, even though glass, will add up over time and age and cause skin damage. Using SPF daily will both prevent and correct this photo damage.

We advise using an SPF 30 with a physical (zinc/titanium) sunscreen. And ladies — do not rely on your makeup for protection! Most women never apply nearly enough makeup to equal the SPF listed on the bottle; plus, makeup is not usually worn down the neck. Photo aging starts to become apparent on your neck as early as your 40s and 50s so the sooner you start a regular regimen of SPF application, the better.

Secondly, the daily topical application of Vitamin A and other antioxidants is essential for healthy skin as well. Vitamin A is the great “skin normalizer” and a skin rich in Vitamin A will be less susceptible to photo damage. There are different forms of Vitamin A, and in our office we’ll recommend the type of Vitamin A that’s appropriate for your particular skin type and lifestyle. Antioxidants, such as Vitamin C and E, also play a very strong supporting role in skin health. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production and is a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize dangerous free radicals which, among other things, are caused by our daily sun exposure. Vitamin C, just like Vitamin A, should be replenished topically daily. It’s not enough to just take these vitamins orally — they are better able to work their magic in the skin, when placed directly on the skin.

Lastly, if you want healthier skin examine your lifestyle. You know the old saying, “You are what you eat”? Well, it’s particularly true when it comes to your skin. A healthy lifestyle will reward you with many benefits including healthier skin — so if you need to, make the necessary changes to your eating and activity habits. For example, sugar is the skin’s worst enemy — reduce your intake of it. Studies show that stress causes wrinkles so learn and practice stress-reduction techniques. And of course, make sure you get enough quality sleep (there’s truth behind the term “beauty rest”!) No matter what skin care program we develop for you, poor lifestyle choices will prohibit you from having your healthiest, best-looking skin.

Healthy skin is a process, not one miracle treatment. There’s no magic silver bullet. Just like physical fitness, it requires an ongoing commitment and consistency. And like physical fitness, if you remain dedicated to the program outlined for you, you’ll be rewarded with an appearance that you’ll be happy with.
