Why Your Surgeon Needs to be Board-Certified
Doctors are required to be licensed in order to practice medicine in the United States but they aren’t required to be board-certified. That makes it even more impressive that our team of doctors
at Aesthetic Surgery Associates are all board-certified.
Board certification is a voluntary process that demonstrates a doctor is an expert in his/her particular speciality. Whereas earning your licensure shows you have met the minimum requirements to diagnose and treat patients, board certification shows you have made a commitment to take your knowledge to the next level. Here are a few of the benefits of choosing a doctor who is board-certified:
It demonstrates the doctor as an expert.
Board-certified doctors are backed by additional experience and training. A surgeon who is board-certified in plastic surgery needs to complete at least six years of additional training after medical school. This can include a combination of three to five years of general surgery training, and two to three years of plastic surgery training. After training, doctors must pass a written and oral examination.
Doctors who are board-certified are committed to ongoing training.
Once the training and examinations are complete, the doctor will still need to renew this certification through continued learning, training, and a written exam every 10 years
. This shows a renewed and ongoing commitment to maintaining expert level knowledge and training, and an additional layer of commitment to patient care.
Board-certified doctors are held to higher standard of practice and ethics.
Doctors who are board-certified in plastic surgery are committed to adhere to current ethical standards as outlined in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) bylaws, code of ethics, and conflict of interest policy. This commitment demonstrates a willingness to put patient care over profit, and only act on the best interest of the patient.
In addition to being board-certified plastic surgeons in the Lehigh Valley, the team at Aesthetic Surgery Associates are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S) and are all active staff members at Lehigh Valley Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Surgical Specialty Hospital at Coordinated Health, Fairgrounds Surgical Center, and Sacred Heart Hospital. Dr. Marie Wagener
is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (F.A.A.D.). Dr. Kevitch
and Dr. Chung
are also members of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), a society that recognizes board-certified plastic surgeons who have honed their skills in the cosmetic aspects of the field.
