And the Winner is…. A comparison of miraDry vs Botox to treat Hyperhidrosis

Back in March, we explained in a blog post how miraDry® can help stop your embarrassing underarm sweating, but what you may not know is that Botox® can do the same.

While Botox® is best known for its ability to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, Botox® can also be used to manage hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating. It works by stopping the signals that usually tell your brain to activate your sweat glands, essentially turning off your sweat glands in the injection area.

We compared the key benefits, cost, odor protection, long-term effectiveness, and recovery of both treatments, and we have a winner!

If it’s a matter of cost, miraDry® comes out on top.

One session of Botox® under each arm will provide six months of reduced underarm sweating.

This means that treatment will need to be continued every 6 months in order to effectively stop underarm sweating.

In contrast, miraDry® is a permanent solution to stop underarm sweating in one to two treatments. Although cost of both treatments vary based on the treatment facility, the cost of miraDry® is roughly the same as undergoing three Botox® treatments; however, it will last a lifetime.

If it’s a matter of odor protection, miraDry® takes the lead.

Botox® is an effective solution to stop underarm sweating but does it not affect odor. miraDry® is a permanent solution for not only underarm sweating, but also odor.

Rather than blocking the signal that allows your body to produce sweat, miraDry® reduces sweat glands by killing them off by 70 to 90%.

If it’s a matter of long-term effectiveness, miraDry® is the winner.

As previously mentioned, miraDry® is a permanent solution that reduces your ability to sweat and the related odor by 70 to 90%.  Although some sufferers with extreme cases of hyperhidrosis return for a second treatment to see if they can further reduce sweating, the results are lasting and treatment does not need to be repeated.

If it’s a matter of recovery process, Botox® comes out ahead.

Although both procedures are minimally invasive and do not have drastic side effects, patients may suffer some bruising, swelling, and numbness as a result of miraDry® treatment compared to Botox®.

With all of this information, most patients opt for miraDry® as the most cost-effective, long-term treatment option for excessive underarm sweating. Want to discuss potential treatment options and what we can do to make you feel more confident in your body? Contact us today!
